I didn't really get involved in the scenarios, but with the espionage, AI, and new units alone are enough to make it unimaginable to go back to the classic Civ4 for me. All individually subtle, but collectively also a noticeable improvement. A bunch of new content like civilizations, leaders, units, wonders, new art, etc. Better than what they had before, but not really a huge addition. A classic civ-style space race game where you assemble your ship bit-by-bit and decide how buff you want it to be. I never really used it, but could see how it would be handy. The option to start later-game with a premade nations. Assuming you don't mind the extra luck factor they're pretty cool and some of them have cool effects like giving a permanent buff to one of your types of units. Random events, decisions, and quests that pop up as you play. A proper Espionage system, which is very cool. Corporations, which are a neat idea but don't come into play much because they're late game and very special-resource dependent. Scenarios aside, a quick refresher from Wikipedia plus my own comments: My wife and I play Warlords all the time would it be worth upgrading to BtS?

What did BtS add that Warlords didn't have? I have Warlords, and got a duplicate Lego Batman for Christmas that's going to be exchanged for some other game. Think of them as "expansions" in the sense that they add more factions, units, and options rather than as additional campaigns. (except for custom scenarios that specifically don't use them) On that note, there's little reason to play classic Civ 4 or Warlords over Beyond the Sword, since BtS has all of the content of Warlords included except for the Warlords-specific scenarios.

The main thing that Warlords and Beyond the Sword add, to me, is additional gameplay elements that enhance the core Civilization 4 play.

Certainly not across classic/Warlords/BtS. IIRC, There's not really a linked narrative between the scenarios, so you won't be missing anything. Should I even bother with the Original Civ IV and just play the 2 expansions, Beyond the Swords and Warlords? Will I be missing anything if I don't play the Original? They were all cobbled together, I assumed there would be a Structured way to hit 'Play Game' and it would advance through them in a mission or Chapter sort of way. What confused me was the selection of scenarios.
